Should Animal Abuse Be Legal?

By: Liv Smith

Have you ever wondered why animal cruelty cases aren’t taken as seriously as ones involving citizens? Animals are just as helpless and defenseless as anyone else that can be victimized. Currently, animal abuse violations are fined and the perpetrator(s) can spend up to a few weeks in a local county jail. For many, that is not enough. In most states a violation is only counted as a misdemeanor. Animals are sentient beings and rely on humans for food, shelter, water, and veterinary care. Perpetrators often claim that it is not a violent act because some people can’t help it, they abandon or neglect their animals due to them not being able to care for themselves, if they cannot buy their own necessities why would they buy it for their animals? Animals are considered property to many pet owners. However, opposing views claim that there should be harsher sentences, as studies have been done linking animal abuse to child abuse. It’s time we stand up for the ones who can’t stand up for themselves.
